FAQs

The Macquarie Wharf Redevelopment Project is a multistage project that will see critical wharf infrastructure modernised across Macquarie wharves 4,5, and 6 in the Port of Hobart.

The upgrades will deliver improved climate resilient wharf infrastructure and improve efficiency, safety and sustainability across port operations.

The first stage will see a new purpose-built Antarctic & Southern Ocean berth for the Australian Antarctic Division’s RSV Nuyina at Macquarie Wharf 6.

In a Tasmanian first, shore power will also be introduced at Macquarie Wharf 6 allowing the RSV Nuyina to sustainably operate on grid power, rather than diesel.

Critical design reviews are underway for Macquarie Wharf 6 with TasPorts construction partner Hazell Brady Joint Venture moving onsite from late March. Site investigations will be completed in the coming months.

Demolition of existing wharf infrastructure is planned for May 2026.

Works will include demolition of the existing wharf, construction of a new wharf structure, commissioning of shore power for RSV Nuyina, and upgrades to support port infrastructure and services.

Shore power allows docked vessels to “plug into” Tasmania's hydroelectric supplied grids instead of running off the vessel's diesel auxiliary engines while in port.

A cable attaches the vessel to a shore power connection delivering AC electricity to run systems like lights, heating, cooling, and appliances while reducing emissions.

The redevelopment of Macquarie Wharf 6 is planned to be completed by August 2028.

The Macquarie Wharf 6 upgrade is part of the broader Macquarie Wharf Redevelopment Project, which will be delivered in stages, with Macquarie Wharves 4 and 5 to follow.

This approach will minimise impacts to port operations.

TasPorts is committed to engaging our key stakeholders and is working closely with customers across industry and businesses surrounding our ports.

Impacted customers have been engaged directly on the redevelopment of Macquarie Wharf.

TasPorts is also working closely with surrounding businesses, the Macquarie Point Development Group, TasWater and the Department for State Growth to ensure there are minimal impacts as we move into delivery of the Macquarie Wharf Redevelopment.

The Macquarie Wharf 6 redevelopment is the first stage of the broader Macquarie Wharf Redevelopment Project, which is underpinned by an $188 million investment from the Australian Government.  This investment will deliver a fit-for-purpose wharf for Australia’s world-class Antarctic icebreaker, the RSV Nuyina, and ensures Tasmania’s role as the gateway to Antarctica.

Under the funding agreement between the Australian Government and the Tasmanian Government, TasPorts will lead the project delivery of the wharf upgrades.

Macquarie Wharf 6 is a secure wharf and not open to the public. Project updates including construction timelapse footage will be added to the website.
