Bass Strait Renewable Energy Terminal

TasPorts understands the current demand for the Port of Bell Bay from on and offshore wind development projects and emerging industries associated with offshore wind.

Through extensive engagement with industry, TasPorts has tested market demand and further explored project requirements to enable the organisation to unlock additional energy generation opportunities for the state of Tasmania.

In response, TasPorts has developed a vision for the Port of Bell Bay that could position Tasmania as a key player in offshore wind energy generation for southeast Australia.

TasPorts' proposed Bass Strait Renewable Energy Terminal would see the staged development of up to 25 hectares of additional land at the Port of Bell Bay, supported by reclamation.

The vision has capacity to deliver new berths and associated infrastructure, large-scale laydown and storage for offshore wind components, as well as bespoke infrastructure to support the construction, operation and maintenance of multiple on and offshore wind projects for Tasmania and Southeast Australia.

Importantly, TasPorts' vision for the port will enable development opportunities at the Port of Bell Bay, alongside established industries within the precinct.

TasPorts has progressed its vision through its internal project governance framework, completing its concept phase in February 2024, followed by its identification phase in September 2024.

To support this achievement, significant work has been completed to date, including:

  • Environmental studies,
  • Drone and LIDAR surveys
  • Traditional and 3D bathymetry surveys
  • Plan development for reclamation areas and off port storage options
  • Identification of complementary projects and efficiency opportunities within the port gates
  • Stakeholder consultation
  • Pathway investigations to support and streamline required planning and development approvals

The proposed project will now progress through the Selection Phase, through which TasPorts will work to:

  • Engage further with stakeholders
  • Prove project viability
  • Streamline long-lead time items
  • Complete financial and economic analysis
