The second annual Tasmanian Biosecurity Awards has recognised outstanding contributions to the state's biosecurity efforts. The awards, held at Parliament House, celebrated individuals and organisations that have made significant strides in protecting Tasmania's unique environment and economy.
TasPorts was awarded the Industry Biosecurity Award for its commitment to enhancing biosecurity practices across its multi-port network.
The Environment and Sustainability team has implemented innovative strategies, including tailored educational materials and regular inspections, to mitigate biosecurity risks.
TasPorts Manager Environment and Sustainability, Susan McLeod, said the awards were a great initiative that demonstrates community and industry passion towards strong biosecurity.
"Biosecurity is fundamental to our environment and primary industries," Ms McLeod said.
"It's inspiring to see the dedication of individuals and organisations in safeguarding Tasmania's unique biosecurity status."
"The goal is to increase awareness among our people and port users about the potentially harmful marine pests that are either already widespread or are at risk of entering and becoming established in our unique marine environment."
Bettina Elischer, an employee at the Office of the Governor at Government House, was awarded the Community Biosecurity Award. Her dedication to the Tasmanian beekeeping community and her invaluable contributions to Biosecurity Tasmania's statewide bee pest surveillance program were recognised.
Acting General Manager of Biosecurity Tasmania, Justin Helmich, expressed his enthusiasm for the awards ceremony, highlighting the passion and commitment of all nominees.
