The Street Performance Program at the Port of Hobart aims to create more vibrant and appealing public spaces along Franklin Wharf by providing local musicians and artists with a free and safe place to perform at designated times and in selected locations in the TasPorts area.

The activation of underutilised areas of Franklin Wharf with informal performances aims to increase community enjoyment and use of the waterfront precinct.

Street performance has a long history; wandering minstrels, troubadours, comedians, and circus folk performed on the street to earn a living. This tradition extends into the modern day.

Given the social and economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on the arts industry, the trial will expand opportunities for local musicians and street performers to perform across Hobart and generate financial income.

A three-month trial of the proposed program will be conducted from November 2022 to January 2023 to determine performer uptake and seek community and stakeholder feedback. A formal feedback process will be in place following the trial. Our trial supports the aspirations of the City of Hobart’s Hobart Community Vision, which acknowledges Hobart as a creative and cultural capital with programs that bring creativity to our city.

The program allows performers holding a TasPorts permit to perform or 'busk' at designated times and in selected locations in the TasPorts area, including Brooke St Forecourt, Elizabeth St Forecourt, Waterside Stage, and the Steam Crane Stage.
