Major dredging works at the Port of Burnie were recently completed as part of TasPorts’ commitment to invest $200 million in Tasmania’s ports over the next 15 years.

TasPorts has completed the dredging works as upgrades at Berth 4 near completion ahead of the arrival of Toll’s two new larger ships.
The two new state-of-the-art ships enter operation from berth 4 on 1 March 2019. They will carry 40 per cent more cargo than Toll’s existing ships, providing a welcome boost to the service which links Tasmania with mainland Australia and to vital export markets.
Toll is investing $35 million in Burnie, which in addition to the dredging managed by TasPorts, will result in upgraded wharf and terminal facilities to optimise efficiency and capacity. It is expected the entire project will generate about 120 jobs during construction.
TasPorts Acting Chief Executive Officer Anthony Donald said the dredging works were successful and are integral to the success of Toll’s project.
“TasPorts completed the project two months ahead of the new vessels’ arrival to Burnie Port with minimal impacts on shipping movements and customers,” he said.
“More than 8,500m3 of silt, consolidated clay and low strength sand stone was removed from Berth 4 during the works.
“Also, more than 60 timber pile stumps from a previous demolished wharf were also extracted from the site.”
Mr. Donald said TasPorts was committed to its customers and was delighted to support Toll’s vital link from Tasmania to mainland Australia.
TasPorts and Toll have a collaborative relationship which is critical to the success of the wharf upgrade.
