TasPorts, which owns and operates Devonport Airport, has formally welcomed the return of Regional Express (Rex) to its operations today (19 August).

Rex and its predecessor, Kendell, serviced the Melbourne-Devonport route between 1989 and 2005.

Now the airline is back, with its arrival set to deliver important socio-economic benefits to Devonport and the north-west coast.

TasPorts CEO Anthony Donald said the local community had been asking for a second airline for some time.

“We’re very pleased to offer more carrier options at the Devonport Airport,” he said.

“This new service adds additional capacity for both the business and leisure traveller to access the north-west region.

“It provides the public with greater flexibility to plan their trips to interstate and beyond.”

Rex is offering a twice-daily weekday service between Melbourne and Devonport, with passengers now able to travel and return on the same day.

A single day return service is available at weekends.

Devonport becomes Rex’s third Tasmanian destination, with the airline already operating out of Burnie and King Island.
