TasPorts has completed a major infrastructure upgrade at the Port of Grassy, with the final stage of the Wharf Bollard Replacement Project reaching practical completion this week.
The project was designed to improve the port’s operational resilience and safety, ensuring reliable shipping services for the King Island community. Works included the installation of six wharf bollards, five inland bollards and more than 90 metres of wharf edge protection.
The upgrade was delivered by TasPorts in partnership with Tasmanian contractor BridgePro, with close involvement from TasPorts’ Technical Services and King Island operations teams.
TasPorts CEO Anthony Donald said the completion of the project was a significant milestone for both the business and the King Island community.
“This upgrade is about making sure the Port of Grassy is fit-for-purpose to support the ongoing movement of essential freight,” Mr Donald said.
“The new bollards are designed to better withstand the challenging sea state conditions in Grassy Harbour and to support safer and more efficient vessel operations.”
“What’s most pleasing is that this complex upgrade was delivered without disruption to King Island’s critical freight services. Thanks to a collaborative effort between our staff, contractors and port users.”
The project involved the placement of 530 cubic metres of concrete and 38 tonnes of reinforcing steel, including innovative piling-free inland bollards and micro-concrete capping to reduce line chafing.
“This was an excellent example of engineering and innovation working hand-in-hand to deliver infrastructure that meets the unique needs of our regional ports,” Mr Donald said.
TasPorts remains committed to maintaining and investing in infrastructure across its network to ensure safe, sustainable and reliable port services that support Tasmania’s economy and communities.
