The Street Performance Program at the Port of Hobart aims to create more vibrant and appealing public spaces along Franklin Wharf by providing local musicians and artists with a free and safe place to perform.

A 3-month trial (extended to 5 months) of the Street Performance Program was completed from November 2022 to March 2023. A feedback survey was recently issued to Port of Hobart stakeholders, and the feedback was overwhelmingly positive.

One of our registered buskers said, ‘It was fun, and the travellers really enjoyed our music’.

Another respondent said, ‘It is great to support artists and have this initiative to enhance the waterfront area. It makes it a fun place to visit, making people return to the area again and again.’

The program will now receive permanent inclusion in TasPorts’ Community Engagement portfolio, and local musicians and performers are encouraged to register.

Activating these under-utilised areas hopes to expand opportunities for local musicians and street performers across Hobart to perform and generate financial income while increasing community enjoyment and use of the waterfront precinct.

Street performance has a long history; wandering minstrels, troubadours, comedians, and circus folk performed on the street, and this tradition extends into the modern day.

The program allows performers holding a TasPorts permit to perform or ‘busk’ at designated times and in selected locations in the TasPorts area.
