As the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) prepares to celebrate the International Day for Women in Maritime on Sunday 18 May 2025, TasPorts reaffirms its strong commitment to fostering gender equality and reducing barriers for women within the maritime industry. The global theme for 2025, "An Ocean of Opportunities for Women," resonates deeply with TasPorts' ongoing efforts to create a more inclusive and equitable workforce.

While the traditional image of the maritime sector may focus on seafaring roles, TasPorts highlights the diverse range of career pathways available within its operations. These encompass vital positions in areas such as marine operations (including tug masters and pilots), logistics, engineering, corporate services, and environmental management, all essential to the efficient functioning of our ports.

The International Day for Women in Maritime serves as a crucial annual observance, promoting the recruitment, retention, and sustained employment of women in this dynamic sector. It aims to elevate the visibility of women in maritime, reinforce the IMO's dedication to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 5 (gender equality), and address the existing gender imbalance within the industry.

TasPorts acknowledges the significance of the upcoming live YouTube stream IMO symposium on Friday 16 May and the anticipated release of the 2024 IMO-WISTA Women in Maritime Survey. The findings of this survey, focused on gathering essential data regarding women's participation in maritime and ocean fields, will provide valuable insights into the progress achieved and the challenges that remain.

TasPorts is proud to celebrate the achievements of women at TasPorts and inspire the next generation of female maritime professionals. Recognising that the pursuit of gender equality is a continuous journey, the organisation remains committed to proactively creating more opportunities and dismantle any obstacles that may impede women from achieving their full potential within the maritime industry.
