The surge in infrastructure development and port capacity requirements has created an immediate need for a substantial boost in expertise, both in the present and for the foreseeable future. It is with pride that we announce our support for the Australian Maritime College’s (AMC) “Engineering Our Future” program.
TasPorts is making substantial investments in the state’s port infrastructure to ensure sustained support for exporters and industries. This endeavour aims to enhance the capacity and capability of TasPorts’ primary ports, with notable projects like the Devonport East Redevelopment QuayLink, a once-in-a-generation $240 million initiative. These berthing and terminal upgrades will accommodate larger vessels, effectively increasing freight capacity for operators in the Bass Strait by a staggering 40%.
In Hobart, TasPorts continues to work through the planning and design phase for the redevelopment of Macquarie Wharf. This ambitious project will position the Port of Hobart as the international gateway to the Southern Ocean, actively supporting world-class Antarctic exploration and scientific research while also facilitating the expansion of log and container storage facilities.
These extensive, long-term programs underscore the pressing need for a highly educated and skilled local workforce, emphasising the need to secure Tasmania’s engineering future.
The AMC plays a pivotal role in addressing this crisis. By actively recruiting students into its dedicated degree programs, AMC aims to ensure a steady supply of graduates capable of bolstering Australia’s national industrial capability.
