Tasmania has reached a major milestone in its cruise industry, welcoming the 1.5 millionth cruise passenger into the Port of Hobart since the state’s modern cruise era began in 2013.
The Disney Wonder, which arrived in Hobart on Wednesday, carried this landmark passenger—an achievement that reflects Tasmania’s growing reputation as a premier cruise destination and the vital role the industry plays in supporting local businesses.
TasPorts CEO Anthony Donald said the milestone highlights the continued resurgence of cruise tourism and its economic significance for Tasmania.
“Cruise tourism brings substantial benefits to Tasmania, injecting millions of dollars into our economy each season. Passengers and crew visit local attractions, dine at restaurants, shop in retail stores, and join tours, directly supporting businesses across the state,” Mr Donald said.
“From Hobart and Burnie to Bell Bay, Coles Bay, and Port Arthur, TasPorts is proud to play a key role in facilitating this demand, ensuring our ports continue to provide world-class services for cruise lines and their guests.”
Tasmania’s cruise sector has gone from strength to strength, with visitors exploring some of the state’s most iconic destinations, including Salamanca Market, MONA, kunanyi/Mount Wellington, and Port Arthur.
The flow-on economic impact is significant, with cruise passengers and crew contributing to a wide range of local businesses, from tour operators and transport providers to hospitality and retail.
Mr Donald said the milestone is also a testament to the strong collaboration between TasPorts, the Tasmanian Government, tourism operators, and industry partners.
“The continued success of Tasmania’s cruise season is the result of coordinated efforts across government and industry. By working together, we are ensuring the long-term sustainability of cruise tourism while delivering exceptional visitor experiences.”
TasPorts plays a leading role in facilitating cruise tourism in Tasmania, with a focus on safe, efficient, and welcoming port operations.
“We are committed to supporting the sustainable growth of cruise tourism by continuing to enhance our port infrastructure and services. This ensures Tasmania remains a destination of choice for cruise lines and passengers,” Mr Donald said.
With the busy cruise season underway, TasPorts will continue to work closely with industry partners to showcase the very best of Tasmania to visitors from around the world.
