A major upgrade to navigational safety infrastructure at the Port of Grassy has reached its next milestone, with on-site construction works commencing last week.
The project, delivered by TasPorts, will modernise critical navigation systems at the King Island port, including new Port Entry Lights (PEL), upgraded wharf floodlighting, new navigation buoys, an AIS/VHF antenna system, and revised leads within the harbour and approach channels.
TasPorts Group Executive for Major Projects, Assets and Technical Services, Michel de Vos, said the works would deliver long-term safety and reliability benefits for the King Island supply chain.
“Upgrading Grassy’s navigation aids is a vital investment in the port’s safe and sustainable operation, particularly given the challenging sea conditions experienced in the region,” Mr de Vos said.
“These improvements will provide greater guidance and visibility for vessel masters, supporting safer and more consistent access to the port.”
Design and planning for the project has been underway for several months, with on-site civil and mechanical installation works now commencing.
The navigation project represents an investment of approximately $1.28M and follows the recent completion of the more than $1.75M bollard replacement project, which delivered new quayline and inland bollards and more than 90 metres of upgraded wharf edge protection.
Mr de Vos said both projects were part of TasPorts’ broader commitment to strengthening regional port infrastructure.
“King Island’s shipping link is essential to the movement of goods and livestock, and we recognise how important it is for the community to have confidence in the port’s capability and performance,” he said.
“We’re focused on delivering targeted upgrades that improve safety, support the freight task, and provide lasting benefits for the island’s industries.”
