Pedestrian safety a focus this cruise ship season

TasPorts Chief Executive Officer Anthony Donald said similar measures had been put in place for the past three cruise ship seasons for the safety of all pedestrians on the waterfront.

“The safety measures are critically important given the numbers of passengers and crew expected between the middle of October this year and March next year,” he said.

Mr Donald said 65 cruise ships were scheduled to visit the Port of Hobart in 2019/20.

“The change in traffic management will begin with the arrival of this season’s first cruise ship on 15 October,” he said.

Meter parking in the closed-off area will not be available during cruise ship visits.

Permit holders will continue to have controlled access to the area.

Mr Donald said, as in previous seasons, TasPorts was communicating directly with those stakeholders affected by the changed traffic conditions to minimise any inconvenience or possible impacts on their businesses.

A 24-hour road closure will be extended along the waterfront between 21 December 2019 and 4 January 2020 to accommodate the Sydney to Hobart yacht race and New Year celebrations on the waterfront.
