Recognition for TasPorts marine team heroes

Nine TasPorts employees were recognised for their bravery with a Certificate of Appreciation from Commissioner Darren Hine, as part of the Tasmania Police Medal Ceremony in Burnie.

The certificate was presented to Kevin Newman, Peter Harris, Ivan Tait, Mike Richardson, Andrew Steyn, Jason Gale, Noel Goodwin, Lyndon Riley and David Kent who worked in the TasPorts tugs and the lines boats.

Mr Newman, TasPorts Tug Master North-West, said it was an honour to accept the award on behalf of the whole team at such a prestigious event.

“At the time things got very serious very quickly but the whole team remained calm and acted professionally to get the job done – it was a great effort by all.“

Executive General Manager Marine Services and Shipping Matthew Johnston said TasPorts was immensely proud of the efforts of all of those recognised today.

“All of them went above and beyond to save lives and protect property during these terrible floods and everyone at TasPorts is delighted that the have been recognised in this way.”

Record-breaking rains led to devastating widespread flooding across Tasmania in June 2016 claiming lives and causing millions of dollars of damage for families, businesses, farmers and communities.

The floods affected 20 of Tasmania’s Local Government areas including Latrobe which includes the Port of Devonport where the TasPorts team recognised today played their part.
