TasPorts has donated 20 refurbished phones and accessories to Tasmanian crisis service Jireh House, giving women and children leaving family violence access to secure devices, free from the tracking risks that can come with shared or monitored phones.

TasPorts' IT team securely wiped and reset each phone before donation, removing all TasPorts data and giving the devices a second life.

TasPorts CEO Captain Allan Gray said the donation reflects the organisation’s commitment to reducing waste and supporting the community in practical ways.

“These devices are no longer needed in our operations, but they can make a real difference for people who need them,” Captain Gray said.

"We wanted them to go somewhere they'd genuinely help, and Jireh House is a great example of that."

The donation is part of TasPorts’ wider support for community organisations across Tasmania, with a focus on locally relevant initiatives.

Jireh House is a welcoming, supportive crisis service for women and children in Tasmania, providing safe housing and assistance during times of crisis.

Jireh House Practice Coordinator, Renae said access to safe and reliable mobile phones is critical for women leaving violent situations.

“Having a secure, clean phone is essential for a safe separation,” Renae said.

“Technology can be used as a form of control and abuse, including tracking through mobile devices. These refurbished phones will help ensure women and children can stay safe, maintain their privacy and access the support they need.”

Jireh House has been supporting Tasmanians since the 1980s, when a small group of local volunteers began providing shelter to women and children escaping family violence. Today, a dedicated team continues that work, supporting women and children experiencing homelessness and crisis.
