TasPorts has been highly commended at the WorkSafe Tasmania Awards for a new, purpose-built mobile platform that was designed, fabricated and installed at Selfs Point.

Entered in the Excellence in Implementing a Work Health and Safety Solution category, the new platform ensured safe under-wharf access for TasPorts’ personnel and contractors during the company’s $8 million project to upgrade Selfs Point’s fire protection system.

This access was critical given the location of the Self’s Point facility and wharf on the north-west bank of the Derwent River which is often exposed to high winds and rough waters with fast flowing tides.

During the year-long project, zero injuries were recorded by TasPorts’ personnel and contractors while working on the under-wharf zone. This was an impressive result given the exposed location of the facility and the type of work required.

Pleasingly, while designed specifically for Selfs Point, the mobile platform has application at other TasPorts’ sites around the State.

Selfs Point handles approximately 50 per cent (3.5 million litres) of Tasmania's annual fuel supply imports and due to its position on the north-west bank of the River Derwent, is often exposed to high winds and rough waters.

The annual WorkSafe Tasmania Awards recognise organisations and individuals at the forefront of workplace safety and wellbeing, commending their efforts in safeguarding Tasmanian employees and visitors.
