TasPorts releases FY2026 Trade report

TasPorts’ final trade figures for 2025-26 (FY26) demonstrate resilient and stable trade across the state, with a total freight volume of 14.28 million tonnes. This was despite a challenging operating environment for TasPorts’ customers and Tasmanians alike - operating amid subdued economic growth, persistent cost pressures, and heightened supply chain uncertainty due to global geopolitical unrest.

FY26 Vs FY25 highlights

• Total freight steady at 14.28 million tonnes
• Container numbers é 3.7% to 635,542 TEU.
• Forestry volumes é 7.3%, lifting share of all freight to 26.2%.
• Fertiliser throughput increased to 352,121 tonnes.
• Industrial freight ê 15.1%, with freight share falling to 19.5%.
• Port of Burnie tonnage é 4.4%, increasing statewide share to 35.3%.

These results reflect adaptation rather than broad-based growth, with gains in forestry, fertiliser and containerised cargo offsetting weaker volumes for commodities like industrial freight. They also highlight the capacity of Tasmania’s freight and logistics system to respond to a changing cargo mix, and the importance of flexible and efficient links between the state’s port, road and rail networks to successfully enable trade.
